Background
While working at openbox9, I worked on several projects for the National Wildlife Federation (NWF), including several websites, apps, and campaigns.
Wildlife Report
Like many organizations, the National Wildlife Federation creates a print annual report to show supporters what they accomplished in the previous year. The organization decided that adding an annual report website would help reach more Americans. My role was to help transition the print report into an engaging website that conveyed the impact of the organization.
Garden for Wildlife Campaign & Tools
A large part of the National Wildlife Federation’s mission is to help people create gardens that help wildlife. This has a ripple effect on our ecosystem and brings both joy and sustainability to our world. The Garden for Wildlife campaign includes three main tools: Native Plant Finder, Butterfly Heroes, and Wildlife Habitat Certification. We designed a campaign that promoted these three tools and creatively showcased NWF's brand throughout.

Designs
Wildlife Report
I led the inaugural design of the digital annual report, which became the model for NWF’s subsequent publications. The website opens with a full-width splash area to entice users and create a full browser experience. As the user scrolls down, this slowly fades into the first of 15 “wins” of the year.

Each of the 15 panels takes the full width and height of the user’s browser, creating a pleasant and immersive reading experience. This allows the stunning photography to tell a story and entice readers to take action on each.

The website went above and beyond the client’s expectations. The organization was so thrilled with how this report informed and engaged users that other sectors of the organization asked us to put their reports into this new format. We applied this foundational wordpress setup to the organization’s gulf report, public lands report, and more. I also worked on related print designs.

Garden for Wildlife Campaign & Tools
The Garden for Wildlife campaign promotes three main tools: the Native Plant Finder, Butterfly Heroes, and a Wildlife Habitat Certification. I worked on designs for all three of these along with the overarching campaign.

Native Plant Finder
Bringing Gardens to Life
Choosing plants is one of the toughest challenges of building a garden. The National Wildlife Federation partnered with the U.S. Forest Service, University of Delaware, and others to create a tool that will help Americans find the plants that will both thrive in their region and also help support birds, butterflies, and other well-loved pollinators. This tool allows users to search by region, plant, or the animal they want to attract. It also allows users to save plants and animals for an easy reference when they visit their nursery.

I created advertisements for these garden programs, as well as assets for Butterfly Heroes. This program is designed to get children excited about the environment, specifically by helping butterflies. Kids can pledge (with the help of their parents) to help the Monarch Butterfly and in return receive a free butterfly garden starter kit.

Garden Certification
Celebrate Gardens that Give Life
I strategized and mapped out the site structure and user interface for these sites so that users would be guided to the most important part of these programs—Wildlife Habitat Certification. Unlike the old website structure, all of the programs are visible under one main navigation.

The Certification program helps raise awareness for wildlife and money for the National Wildlife Federation, making it one of the most important initiatives of the organization. Thousands of gardens are recognized and celebrated for providing the essentials for animals to thrive in places they otherwise would not.

I implemented both of these projects while working at openbox9, a small design agency specializing working with nonprofits. To put these together these designs, I worked across a range of tools and led the interactions with the clients, ensuring the final products worked across multiple platforms.
This partnership showed how thoughtful design can turn mission-driven content into meaningful digital experiences. By transforming reports and campaigns into accessible, visually engaging tools, we helped the National Wildlife Federation reach new audiences and deepen its connection with supporters. It remains one of my favorite examples of design’s power to make complex environmental issues both clear and inspiring.
